Chapter 18

Ellie arrived home quicker than she thought, the snow had kept a lot of the more cautious drivers off the roads so she made her way home on empty roads for once. Peggy was snoozing in a chair by the fire, her leg up on a stool and Bruiser lying beside her, legs in the air and snoring loudly, although so was Peggy.

“Hi honey, how was work?” Kate asked quietly as she got up from the couch to welcome Ellie with a kiss and a hug.

“Well we are now dealing with a murder, not an accident and Gavin has been traumatised by an aging femme fatale.” Ellie responded and then explained the interviews and Doc’s post-mortem results.

“Poor Ron, he always seemed like such a nice man, I can’t think of someone wanting to kill him.” Kate mused as she set a bowl of stew that Aggie had made earlier in front of Ellie who attacked the meal with enthusiasm.

“Well someone had issue with him…not many of the volunteers appeared to like him very much but it’s still early days…hopefully something will come to light. How was your choir practice this morning?”

“It went really well, we sound good considering as individuals half of us sound like cats in heat. We’re all set for the performance tomorrow with mums grotto people.” Kate said confidently.

“Are they still going ahead? How can they without a Santa?” Ellie asked in confusion.

“They’ve picked another Santa…” Kate hesitated. “Peggy is the new Santa.”

“Oh good god how did that happen?” Ellie asked in shock.

“No one else wanted the gig basically. She won’t be able to get into much trouble anyway, she’s hurt her leg falling on ice today so she’ll be sitting down for the majority of the time.”

“She fell? Is she ok?” Ellie asked with concern.

“Oh aye she’s fine, don’t feel sorry for the old rogue she got what she deserved.” Kate muttered but Ellie looked at her for further explanation.

“She iced the pavement to make sure that Marcus slipped as he was running around, he got his revenge by belting her with a snowball and causing her to slip in the same spot.”

“Oh god she’s still fighting with that wean across the street? What is he like seven?” Ellie moaned.

“He’s six and yes she’s in full military mode with this vendetta, she’s planning something.” Kate said just as Peggy’s phone rang. She jolted awake and answered the call furtively.

“Hello…yes I’m glad you called me back Fergie…I need you to do me a wee favour on the quiet…no nothing too big…but I think it will be effective…” she spoke quietly as she hobbled past them and out to the garden.

“Isn’t Fergie one of her not-so-legal hackers?” Ellie asked as she watched Peggy hobble around the garden talking animatedly.

“He is…I thought getting her to volunteer would keep her out of trouble” Kate groaned.
